M45 The Pleiades

M45 The Pleiades......The famous seven sisters and one of the most widely recognized and observed objects in the night sky. In Greek mythology the Pleiades were the seven daughters of the titan Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione born on Mount Cyllene. They are the sisters of Calypso, Hyas, the Hyades, and the Hesperides. The Pleiades were nymphs in the train of Artemis, and together with the seven Hyades were called the Atlantides, Dodonides, or Nysiades, nursemaids and teachers to the infant Bacchus. Due to its size and unique shape in the night sky M45 is tied to probably more ancient mythologies and folklore stories than any other object being tied to various different cultures throughout history from the Romans to the Native American Apaches.
